    Real Life with Pastor Steve

    October 13, 2023

Quickly… name three types or groups of people, or careers, whose primary purpose is to benefit someone else.

Most of our lists would probably include teachers, counselors, medical professionals, EMT’s, fire-fighters, even our local police.  And when you think about it, nearly every type of job can be done with the focus either on others, to benefit others… or on one’s self, to benefit only you. It’s a matter of both perspective, and a higher purpose, a higher “calling” if you will. We as human beings are meant to be in each other’s lives… for the benefit of others. To improve each other’s condition, not tear it down. To provide encouragement, not ridicule. To raise up, not push down. To partner with, not dominate. To make something better simply because we were there.

Believe it or not, but that is also the description that Jesus uses to describe how the people of the church are supposed to function.  Christians. He calls us “salt” and “light.”  Salt and light do not benefit themselves. They only benefit that which they touch, that which they are near.  Adding   flavor, preservative, hope, joy, restoration, and beauty to name a few.  Benefit.  A redemptive community, rather than an agitating irritant.  May we be the benefit to our world that Jesus has made us to be! And that’s … real life. ~Pastor Steve Rowe – Eaglebrook Church
