"Thank God… for the man on the middle cross."  ~ Song lyric by Rhett Walker

There’s an account told in the scriptures that is easily overlooked.  It’s the account of the two criminals on either side of Jesus, both crucified on the same day that Jesus was.  We do not know much about their story, or why they were there.  But we can find bits of ourselves in either of them, if we are honest. One of them was just looking out for himself.  Even though he was guilty, he wanted Jesus to pull off some kind of super-hero thing and get all three of them off those crosses. “Save yourself … and us,” he said.  But Jesus was not here to save Himself.  And yes He was here to save us… but not in the way this criminal wanted.  He just wanted an escape, with no real accountability. The criminal on the other side had a different heart attitude.  He’s like – “dude – we both belong here, He doesn’t.  This guy is innocent.”  He’s not here to fix those kind of problems.  Then he says, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.”  He knew Jesus was going to die, along with him.  But somehow, he knew Jesus was going to do something bigger than save them from Rome.  And he wanted to be part of that.  His worst day, was about to become his best day.  May we all thank God, for the man on the middle cross. And that’s … real life. ~Pastor Steve Rowe – Eaglebrook Church
