Real love… is messy, but it is beautiful.  ~ Steve Rowe

Typically, as Valentine’s Day approaches… we are treated with Cupids and hearts (and that’s great)… but we all know that love is anything but rainbows and lollipops.  Love is messy.  Real love, that is.  Because real love deals with real people in a very real, fallen world, with very real issues.  It’s not always perfect… it is often messy – full of apologies and forgiveness, and sacrifice and serving, of giving – messy… but it is beautiful.

Here’s a great example. Think of these four words:  Betrayal… glory… denial… love.  That’s anything but rainbows and lollipops… but it’s real love. It describes the events in the final few hours of the life of Jesus before the cross.  The betrayal of Judas, one of His own disciples.  Glory… but glory at the expense and at the end of suffering.  Denial… the denial of this fledgling group’s strongest leader, Peter.  And yet through it all, there’s this thread that ties it all together, something that remains consistent… Love.

Messy… but beautiful.  Love offered to us, in spite of us, and shared as an example for us… so we can truly love too.  So, yeah… love may be messy… but may you experience its beauty!   And that’s … real life. ~Pastor Steve Rowe – Eaglebrook Church
