“A bird does not sing because it has an answer, it sings because it has a song.” ~ Chinese Proverb
Answers are great. Answers are important. But there is a huge difference between thinking you have all the right answers, and actually living life well. This has never been more pertinent than when it comes to how we approach the Bible.
Many people expect the Bible to be some kind of an answer book or instruction manual. They want “all the right answers” and so they go to the Bible to find them. But, the Bible is not a textbook of answers. As much as we might want the Bible to be a straight forward instruction manual, that’s not what it is. Anyone who has opened the Bible has discovered that it is not organized in a way to supply you with one-size-fits-all answers on how to improve your marriage, how to raise your kids, or how to manage your finances. The Bible is a collection of historical books, written over hundreds of years, that fit together to create an unfolding narrative. The Bible is a Story, and it is a Story that invites you to participate.
The point being, if you approach the Bible merely as a place to find the right answers, even if you happen to find those right answers, your life may still remain completely unchanged. But, if you begin to experience the Story of the Bible as the unfolding narrative that it is, and choose to participate in that Story… that is when real change begins to happen. And that’s… real life. ~ Arnie Boedecker on behalf of Pastor Steve Rowe – Eaglebrook Church
