“We cannot learn without pain.” ~ Aristotle, Greek philosopher
Nobody likes pain. No one wants to hear bad news. We would all rather enjoy the pleasures of life and avoid any hardship. But we all know that this is not how life works.
Bad things happen. Plans do not always turn out the way that you had hoped. Plan A soon turns into Plan B. Mistakes, detours, and disappointments are our common experience.
But many of us have also discovered that bad news often leads to good news. We often learn from our mistakes. We grow through our disappointments. A closed door often reveals a new opportunity that we would likely have missed out on, had we not been forced to consider other options. So, while none of us would ever choose to go through hardships, we often come to appreciate what results from those hardships.
As we read through the Story of Scripture, it quickly becomes clear that God has a plan for this Creation. God has a plan for His People. But what also becomes clear, is that we rarely live up to those expectations. God points us in one direction, and we veer off in another direction. God makes some wonderful promises, and then we mess things up by doing things our own way. But the surprising sequence that we see, time and time again, is that even though we may make a disaster of things – God always has a new path forward. No amount of our mistakes can ever undo God’s Good News. God still has a Plan A that will reach its destination, and He is still inviting each one of us to participate. And that’s… real life. ~ Arnie Boedecker, Associate Pastor – Eaglebrook Church
