“Love is just a word until someone comes along and gives it meaning.” ~ Paulo Coelho, Brazilian Novelist
We all have special moments in life, moments of significance. But such moments do not typically stand alone. It is usually all the moments that lead up to certain events, or the things that follow certain events that give those moments the significance that they have. It is often the surrounding context that gives each moment meaning.
For instance, look at virtually any personal photograph that you’ve taken. Sure, you will recognize the people, or the places -- but what truly gives meaning to most of our photos is the context. You look at a photo, and it triggers a slew of other memories – where you were, who you were with, what you were doing, the weather, the smells, the laughter, the struggles. It’s all the surrounding details that gives the specific moment captured in the photo the significance that it has.
This is why it is so important, as we read the Bible, to try to read it and to understand it in context. Because, while there are obviously little nuggets of wisdom to be found on every page of the Bible, we can only get to the deeper insights as we immerse ourselves into the larger story. For instance, it is one thing to read that “God is love” – but is another thing altogether to travel the full distance of God’s unfolding story to see God’s love, and to begin to experience that love for ourselves. God is love – but that love only has meaning within the context of the Story. And that’s… real life. ~ Arnie Boedecker, Associate Pastor – Eaglebrook Church
