I say, “I’m fine, yes I’m fine, but I’m not.  I’m broken.” ~ song lyric by Matthew West, “Truth be Told”

If we are being honest… at some point in our lives we’ve all said, “I’m fine,” when in reality we were anything but fine.  Quite often, life can feel like riding a bull that is trying aggressively to throw us off, as we try to hang on. Everything else seems like a blur, and you are just trying to survive… make it one more day, one more week. It can be just demands of life… an intense, stressful season. Maybe it’s being a single parent… or stress at work or school… or a relationship.  Maybe it’s a tragic event that happened in your life… or a health issue. Or maybe, it’s an addiction … or a temptation you cannot stop falling back into.  Whatever it is, it’s like riding a rodeo bull, but we still try to give off the impression to everyone else that “I’m fine.” It simply compounds the already exhausting place we are in.  What we need is the ability to be honest.  If we hope to endure, gain wisdom, change, or heal, then we need to admit we are broken, hurting, in over our head, etc.  But we also need a safe place, and safe people… full of grace, love, and encouragement.  Because sometimes it’s you on the bull, and sometimes it’s the person next to you.  May we admit… “I’m not fine, I’m broken. I need Jesus.  I need others.  And others need me.” And that’s… real life.  ~ Pastor Steve Rowe – Eaglebrook Church
