As we begin the Advent season, one of the first areas of focus is this idea of hope. Christmas reminds us that hope is not a fleeting moment, nor simply wishful thinking. It is based upon something that is sure, stable, unmoving, trust-worthy. Hope is based on a guarantee.
Let’s face it… even though this world is full of spectacular beauty and pleasure and joy. Even though there are flickers of peace and kindness that extend beyond race, language or political affiliation. Even though there are glimpses of light from time to time… this world can be a pretty dark place. A world without hope.
The arrival of the Messiah… the Christ… was not meant to be an isolated event. It was not meant to only give hope to Ancient Israel. The arrival, advent of Jesus was meant to give hope to the entire world. Real light in a world of darkness. Real solutions to our brokenness and sin problem. Real reconciliation. And one day, real and full restoration. Not wishful thinking… but guaranteed. That is what we celebrate in the birth of Christ, as we light the candle of hope this Sunday.
