A heart that is discontent or entitled finds it hard to be thankful no matter what the circumstance… a heart at peace can be thankful in all circumstances.

As we approach the holiday of Thanksgiving, me we choose to thankful more than once a year, but rather, as a frame of mind.

The scripture we are studying this Sunday says, “give thanks in all circumstances.” But it clearly does not say give thanks “for” all circumstances.

Trust me, there are a lot of things in our culture, our world, and in our own lives that we do not have to be thankful “for.”  And that’s ok… God does not expect us to be. However, He has asked us to be thankful “in” everything.  And that comes down to a heart issue.

Think about it… we can choose to be either discontent… or at peace.  We can choose to be entitled… or feel blessed.  We can choose to live as a hurt or wounded person… or someone whose heart has been healed. In other words… we can choose to live a life that is ungrateful… or we can choose to live a life that is thankful. Not thankful “for” all circumstances… but thankful in. Because our thankfulness starts by being thankful for Jesus, for all He has done, and for His presence in our lives.  And that gives us peace.  It helps us focus on our blessings.  It helps us to simply “give thanks” as a way of life.

And that’s … real life. ~ Pastor Steve Rowe – Eaglebrook Church
