Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong. Do everything in love. ~ The Apostle Paul
Paul knew how to close his letters. He always reminds us of the main thing, the most important things. When life is tough… when competing ideas and philosophies begin to look attractive… when walking out your faith is unpopular… when it is tempting to throw in the towel because you wonder if it is actually worth it… when you are mistreated or misunderstood. You need closing words like this. Especially the “love” part.
Because it would be easy to be guarded, but to do so skeptically of everything and everyone. To be closed off to keep yourself from being vulnerable. But love means being vulnerable, and risks being hurt. To be on your guard simply means to be wise, be discerning, don’t just fall for everything. We can do that lovingly.
It would also be easy to stand firm or be strong… but in a belief system or set of dogmas or rules, rather than in Christ Himself, what He did, and how He called us to live as a result. Standing firm often turns into being rude, maybe even judgmental. However, doing everything in love does not allow for that. Which is why “love” is the “how.” Fitting closing words from Paul. May we be enlightened, challenged, and encouraged! And that’s … real life. ~ Pastor Steve Rowe – Eaglebrook Church
