“What’s in your wallet?” – tag line for famous credit card commercial
Another credit card a while back used a tag line just as memorable – “Don’t leave home without it.” The point being… that their card is the most important card … the most valuable card… to have with you. It sets you apart, makes you special, gives you privileges … (at least that is what they are selling us on, right?). And whether or not it’s a particular credit card… we all have “something” in our “wallets” that we “do not leave home without.” They are things we hold to as most vital to us… most important. Maybe our religious service, our accomplishments, our citizenship, our education, our race, our stuff… so many things. Good things. But then comes the temptation to feel that those things make us “better” or more righteous than others… or that “those who die with the most toys wins.” Not so good. Because in reality… those things do not make us “better”… and “those who die with the most toys… still die.” Therefore, there has to be something higher we “carry in our wallets”, that brings perspective to everything else. That’s what the Apostle Paul tells us in Philippians chapter 3. He says “By comparison, I count everything else as a ‘loss’ compared to knowing Jesus.” That’s who I want in “my wallet”. And that’s …real life. ~ Pastor Steve – Eaglebrook Church
