    Love is…

What are the things that come to mind for you?  In a world like ours, there would be a variety of opinions.  In a world full of so much divisiveness and hatred, it is also easy to go a bit too far in our definitions… even with the best of intentions.  So… what is the alternative?  The alternative is to seek the purest definition we can find.  The Apostle John tells us that God is love.  That’s a pretty good place to start.  But that means something… and it does not mean other things. He also says that the lives of the followers of Jesus should reflect God’s love.  Jesus told us to love God with all our hearts, souls, mind, and strength – and to love our neighbor as ourselves.  But that also means something, and does not mean other things. So… what is love supposed to look like?  The Apostle Paul brings a bit more clarity in the famous chapter on love from 1 Corinthians 13.  He writes that “love is patient, love is kind, it does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.  It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.  Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always endures. Love never fails.”

Although we may be tempted to define it in other ways, let’s just start there. And that’s … real life! ~ Pastor Steve Rowe – Eaglebrook Church
