“We can’t help everyone, but everyone can help someone.” ~ Ronald Reagan
We live in a very reciprocal society. When we give, we often expect to receive something in return. If you have done something for me, it is often expected that I would then do something for you. If you gave me a gift for my birthday, I might naturally feel like I should do the same in return. If I take you out for a meal, you might feel obligated to return the favor. It is how many of our relationships work. And, it was no different back during the days of Jesus.
It is into this set of common assumptions that we read in the Scriptures, “since God has so loved us, we should also love one another.” God has demonstrated His great love for us through the Person of Jesus Christ. In Jesus, we see that there is nothing that God wouldn’t do for us, even laying down His very life for us. But rather than merely expecting us to return that great love, this passage tells us that we are supposed to extend that love forward. Instead of paying God back for His love (through a bunch of religious activities that show our devotion), we are instead encouraged to pay it forward. We are told that the way to love God well, is to love others well.
If you are looking for a way to express your gratitude for your many blessings, we do that by showing love to someone else. And that’s… real life. ~ Arnie Boedecker on behalf of Pastor Steve Rowe – Eaglebrook Church
