“Discipline is choosing between what you want now, and what you want most.” ~ Abraham Lincoln
Self-restraint can be hard. When there is something that we desire, and we have the ability to make that happen ourselves, it can be difficult to hold those impulses in check. Whether it has to do with dieting, choosing to save rather than to spend, or biting our tongue when we have the urge to speak our mind, we likely all know the challenge of self-control.
The only thing that empowers us to stand strong when such temptations come our way is having a bigger vision that shapes our choices. It is only when you have a genuine goal of living a healthier life that you are able to make some changes to finally shed those unwanted pounds. It is the dream of an early retirement or a family vacation that can finally motivate you to start saving more. And in the same way, we choose our words more carefully only when we see that the relationship is more important than simply winning the argument. Keeping the larger picture in view is what shapes the smaller choices we make.
We see the same motivation in the Bible. We are repeatedly encouraged to live a life of restraint and self-control. But these choices are not to be based simply on a bunch of stuffy religious rules. No, all that we do is to be shaped and motivated by love. This is the kind of life that Jesus lived… a life of restraint and sacrifice, that was willing to give itself away, precisely because of love. And then, Jesus invites each of us to follow Him. And that’s… real life. ~ Arnie Boedecker, Associate Pastor – Eaglebrook Church
