We will receive not what we idly wish for but what we justly earn. Our rewards will always be in exact proportion to our service. ~ Earl Nightingale
At first glance, that seems right in our hard-working, Western culture. When you receive a paycheck from your job, it’s not because your employer was just “nice” that day, it’s because you earned it, right? When you graduate from college, we say that you “earned” your degree. It means that you worked for it. That’s the way our world works. And by and large, it’s not a “bad” system and it certainly keeps the “loafers” from being rewarded for slothful behavior.
The problem is… many people carry this same mindset over into the church… or into their understanding of God. They view God as some kind of “heavenly employer” that we have to earn something from. So, we try to initially earn His love, His favor, His salvation… then we try to do the same thing to keep it. Earn, work, then the payoff, the reward… so we think. But that is not true. Jesus came to turn that whole mindset upside down. Our “debt” of fallenness is too great to pay back; our only hope is to have our debt “forgiven.” A love… received. A relationship restored. Because God is our Father… not our employer. That, my friends, changes everything. And that’s …real life. ~ Pastor Steve – Eaglebrook Church
