“It is one thing to be set free from prison or slavery (whether literal or figurative), and quite another to decide what to do with your freedom once you’ve got it. ~ NT Wright, British Scholar
In other words, freedom should be used wisely, and not turned into a life without restraint. That’s not freedom, it’s just another form of bondage… bondage to the lowest level of our broken nature… the lowest level of our culture’s standards. And it’s an easy sell… because our base nature just “wants what it wants.” Freedom allows us to make those kinds of choices.
However, when we abuse our freedom that way, there are always unintended consequences. At some point, we get hurt, others get hurt. In other words, that use of freedom is the least loving approach to life we can take.
But how do we keep ourselves from falling into a pattern of overindulgence and license, without resorting to the other extreme of legalism and a bunch of religious rules to keep us in line?
Well… that’s the type of freedom that Christ came to provide. Freedom from sin, not freedom to sin. But also freedom from religion and a rule based life to keep us in line. It is a freedom that is constructive… not destructive. It causes us to be more loving, not less. More responsible, less selfish… from a new internal motivation. That’s real freedom. And that’s… real life. ~ Pastor Steve Rowe – Eaglebrook Church
