“We have enough religion to make us hate, but not enough to make us love one another.”  Jonathan Swift - Irish Author, 1667-1745

Isn’t that a sad commentary? See, religion can’t stop me from hating someone, and it certainly can’t force me to love anyone, especially my enemies.  It is even worse when hatred gets justified in the name of religion, as if … God is pleased with that.  And folks, we could not be more wrong.  The words and example of Jesus make that clear.  We are to love, not only those we consider friends… those who are like-minded.  But we are to love, and desire the highest good and benefit for … those we consider our “enemies.”  And by definition, this is not just people you or your nation are at war with.  This includes people that you strongly disagree with and are in opposition to… people you may feel a hint of hostility toward.  It also includes people you are at odds with and are not reconciled.  We are to love… them. All of them. How is that possible?  By having the same heart that Jesus has… toward us… that’s how.  We can maintain our opinion or position, without hating the other person, degrading them, or mistreating them.  We can actually bless them, serve them, love them.  That’s character. That’s a life beyond religion And that’s …real life. ~ Pastor Steve – Eaglebrook Church
