“A man that studies revenge keeps his own wounds green, which otherwise would heal and do well” ~ Sr. Francis Bacon, English Lawyer and Philosopher

Revenge… getting even… making someone pay… evening the score… there are several words or phrases to describe the same thing.

Revenge stems from some real or perceived grievance. Someone has wronged you somehow. Sometimes intentional, sometimes by accident.   However, we learn at an early age to take matters into our own hands, as we tell people, “You’re gonna pay for that!” But revenge never works out to be “equal,” does it?  Revenge usually exceeds the original offense, and the matter simply escalates. Tribal warfare and countries long at war are testament to that. The Law of Moses in the Old Testament tried to corral the idea of revenge, by instituting a basic form of fair justice.  That is necessary, and it helps. But even fair justice, done with an angry heart, doesn’t help.  Jesus knew that. Revenge does not help anyone.  It resolves nothing, heals no one, including the one who sought to even the score. Jesus modeled and gave us another option. Forgiveness and love.  Returning evil… with good. It resets the scales. It breaks the cycle. And it reflects God’s heart for us. And that’s …real life. ~ Pastor Steve – Eaglebrook Church
