All you need is love. ~ Famous song by the Beatles

   And… we all start breaking out in song, right?  Catchy tune.  And at face value, the sentiment has merit. However, I believe it is an incomplete statement.  Over years of ministry, I’ve been struck by the harsh realities of life… where you can literally pour out love, unconditional love… and relationships still end harshly. Marriages, children & parents, friendships... even just people you know in general. People in your life are unmoved, unchanged, uninterested.  And in some cases, people are even hostile in return.  It's almost if… love does not matter.  And yet… it does.   See… love IS all you need, when it comes to our response.  But that does not guarantee anyone will ever love you in return, or respond back in love.  And I think that is the key.  Jesus said, “God so loved the world, that He gave us His son.”  But that never guaranteed humanity would love God in return.  Yet, God did it anyway.  Why?  Because some would.  Because there is no other way to live.  We need to stop viewing love as something that produces a guaranteed result, and then getting our hearts broken, turning us into cynics.  We need to see love as a way of life, that comes from God’s love toward us… and fills us with the ability to love, regardless of the outcome.  So yeah, it looks like “all you need is love,” … God’s love.   And that’s…real life.  ~ Pastor Steve – Eaglebrook Church
