Do NOT take candy from a stranger! ~ Advice every parent has given their children

Now… why is that?  The main reason is trust.  We do not trust… that a stranger’s motives are pure.  It is just wisdom and common sense to not place yourself into a potentially dangerous situation.  Now, what if the person offering candy was your father, whom you loved, and who loves you?  Then of course, you would feel free to receive that … as a gift.  Trust changes everything.  Knowing your father loves you, and has your best interest at heart, gives you wisdom to know who to listen to… and who not to.

In the letter of James, he pretty much tells us the same thing.  God is our loving, heavenly Father… who would never tempt you to sin or bring harm to yourself or others.  But there is someone who is naturally drawn to sin, and who can potentially bring harm to ourselves and others.  We are… in our fallen, broken nature.  When we make poor choices and suffer the consequences, we often want to blame either God … or even the devil (the devil made me do it).  James says no.  The responsibility falls on you, on me.  And in the end, the analogy is still the same… it is a matter of trust.  Will we trust, listen to, and follow God… or our own hearts?  Let’s choose wisely, as we trust God.  And that’s …real life. ~ Pastor Steve – Eaglebrook Church
