“I’m hopelessly devoted to you.” ~ Song by Olivia Newton John from the movie “Grease.”
Yes, I know that dates me a little bit… but most of us can remember the first time we saw the move “Grease.” Olivia’s sweet character “Sandy” falls in love with a ‘greaser’ named Danny played by John Travolta. Through it all, Sandy is “in” for the long haul, devoted, committed. Classic movie.
Devotion comes in all shapes and sizes. We can be devoted to a cause, a set of principles, a job, a team, a work-out plan. But most often we think of devotion in terms of relationships. We are devoted to people… to God.
Devotion, in other words, when it is real and when is not just a fad… is about a way of life that determines what you do and don’t do, where you go and don’t go… what you say and don’t say. Devotion determines what is important… and what is not important, even when things get tough. It can be healthy… or in the case of terrorists… it can be violent & deadly. So, the question is… what are you devoted to? Is it healthy? If it is not, do your priorities need to change? Or as the early church found out in Acts 2, maybe you need what you are devoted to… to be reshaped by a relationship with God through Jesus. A devotion to life, love, God’s peace. And that’s…real life. ~ Pastor Steve – Eaglebrook Church And that’s … real life. ~Pastor Steve Rowe – Eaglebrook Church
