Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall – Proverbs 16:18
Now this is not talking about the “good” kind of pride. There is a good kind of pride that gives us confidence, dignity, and a healthy self-worth. We can be proud of our kids, our family, our company, our team, etc.
However, there is a type of pride that goes beyond that, and we’ve all experienced it… either within ourselves, or from someone else. That is a pride that is arrogant, conceited, that is based on an attitude of superiority. It places yourself above everyone else, and in extremes this pride will abuse, hurt, ridicule, and shame those they feel are beneath them. This type of pride ultimately becomes a “god” complex, where you are accountable to no one. And we see evidence of that at all levels of our society.
In a world where that is possible, it often appears that the arrogant and prideful always win, and the nice guys finish last. However, the scriptures tell us that without repentance, and without humility… then pride ultimately ends in their own destruction. Jesus also said the last shall be first and first shall be last. So what do you say? Don’t wait until you hit the wall… would you lay down your pride, and instead pick up humility and love. And that’s … real life. ~ Pastor Steve Rowe – Eaglebrook Church
