You are such a dorkus!! ~ Common put-down

Now… given the colorful, expressive world in which we live… “dorkus” is a pretty mild put-down, tame by comparison.  But it does the job… it communicates that someone is acting like an idiot, they’re acting stupid, or sometimes it means something funny – like “you’re so embarrassing, you’re a goof-ball.” At any rate, it is generally not a compliment… particularly when it is spelled that way.  However… if we change the spelling to…“D-O-R-C-A-S”… it’s the same pronunciation, but it means something totally different. Dorcas is a 1^st century Greek name.  It was a beautiful name, and one young woman with that name was a follower of Jesus, and she was known for her attitude of serving the poor, and helping people.  To be a “Dorcas” was a good thing. Unfortunately, she suffered a tragic death. People mourned.  But in a sheer act of grace, the Apostle Peter comes, prays for her, and she comes back to life.  It was a taste of the resurrection.  “Dorcas” was now a walking miracle, a reminder of God’s love and grace… brought from death to life. And she could also continue to love and serve people.  In reality, we are all ‘dead’ and need the life of Christ in us. And… we are all called to love and serve others. So, I want to be… a “Dorcas.”  That’s actually a good thing.  How about you?  And that’s … real life. ~ Pastor Steve Rowe – Eaglebrook Church
