A preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience… making up your mind before knowing all the facts. ~ Definition of prejudice

We have all done that… from simple things like trying a certain food like broccoli … or sushi… to a new methodology of running your business, or a new teaching method… to a group of people based on race, nation of origin, language, or social class.  In other words, we are all a bit irrational at times, pre-judging something before we have all the information.  And then we complicate it by getting just enough facts to support our case, and conveniently ignoring the rest.  Then the problem grows, because prejudice hardly ever stays within the context of our own mind.  It comes out in our words, our actions.  Over time it can turn into hatred, mean-spirited behavior, and even violence.  We see evidence of that all over the world, and in our own country today. How unfortunate.

However, the key is not to avoid having an opinion… the key is not to have our opinion based upon a prejudice.  Nor should our opinions cause us to mistreat people or cause us to get angry and become hateful over things. Like the Apostle Peter did in Acts 10, may we allow God to reveal, then heal our prejudices.  May we see through the eyes of Jesus. And that’s … real life. ~ Pastor Steve Rowe – Eaglebrook Church
