“The various religions are like different roads converging on the same point.”  ~ Mahatma Gandhi

Many in our modern world have adopted the same philosophy as Gandhi – that it doesn’t really matter what religion you choose to follow, because they all lead to the same place in the end.  I would suggest that this is overly simplistic.  However, while I would not agree that all religions automatically lead us to the same place, I would suggest that all religions flow from the same place.

What do I mean by that?  Well, we live in a broken and dangerous world, where bad things can and do happen all the time, over which we have little control.  And so, we are all afraid – afraid that something bad could happen to us at any moment.  This is where religion comes in.  Religion seems to give us the sense of the control we are looking for.  If there is a God who blesses and protects those who are faithful, then as long as I know what the rules are, I can regain a sense of control… because, as long as I do such-n-such, my God promises to bless me.

This is what sets Jesus apart, in my opinion.  Jesus did not come to establish a new religion.  Jesus came to do away with religion.  Instead of attempting to gain control over God and our circumstances through our religious obedience, Jesus invites us to release our control, as we enter into a trusting relationship with God.  He invites us to see that while we are not in control, we are truly safe in the hands of the One who is.

And that’s… real life. ~ Arnie Boedecker on behalf of Pastor Steve Rowe – Eaglebrook Church
