Playing favorites is always a bad thing; you can do great harm in seemingly harmless ways. King Solomon in Proverbs 28:21
It is not uncommon for people to be given “favored status”… to be someone’s favorite… due to race, the color of your skin, gender, your financial status, educational milestones, or even having a “favorite child.” Being someone’s favorite comes with perks and privileges and advantages. Families are just one layer where this can take place. But, as Solomon said, great harm can come by it… no matter where it does.
One of the byproducts of favoritism is that when you are not a “favorite”… you are ignored, treated with contempt, or even abused. Worse yet, whether you are in the group of favorites or not, is when you feel the need to cater to them just to keep you in their good graces. It only reinforces the arrogance of the elite… and it continues to wound the heart of all the rest.
Jesus came to change all of that. He came to raise the status of the have-nots, while not diminishing anyone else to do it. His half-brother James would write that it requires a heart change… a heart of love, and value for one’s neighbor. The “un-favored” toward the favorites… and the favorites toward the “un-favored.” Real change … is possible. And that’s …real life. ~ Pastor Steve – Eaglebrook Church
