“The most dangerous untruths are truths slightly distorted.” ~ Georg C. Lichtenburg, German scientist
When something is obviously a fake, it is easy to tell it apart from the real thing. For instance, it is easy to tell the difference between genuine currency and Monopoly money. But the better the forgery, the more difficult it becomes to tell the difference between what is authentic and what is counterfeit. Most deceptions begin with a foundation of truth.
In the Bible, we read of one occasion where Satan is trying to tempt Jesus. And what does Satan do to try to get Jesus off-track? Satan quotes the Bible. Satan does not misquote the Bible. He does not twist it to make it say something that it doesn’t actually say. No, Satan quotes the Bible perfectly accurately to try to steer Jesus away from the will of God. He starts with Truth, and then plots a deception.
This should wake us up to the fact that just because someone is quoting the Bible (and quoting it accurately!), that does not mean they are trustworthy, or that they truly have your best interests in mind. Sadly, our history is full of people who have used the Bible to deceive.
We live at a time when we are all in need of extra discernment. Reality is often called “Fake News” and lies are promoted as the truth. It is hard to know who to trust, from our politicians, our news outlets, and even our clergy. But seeking after truth requires discernment, and it also requires humility… because one of the biggest barriers to truth is the presumption you already have it. And that’s… real life. ~ Arnie Boedecker, Associate Pastor – Eaglebrook Church
