Always be willing to listen and slow to speak. Do not become angry easily. ~ James, the ½ brother of Jesus in his New Testament letter

Wow… it sounds like the 1st century had the same problems we have today.  In our world today, we are quick to speak… slow to listen… and we get riled up and angry over the simplest comment, position, or decision we may disagree with.  We have lost the ability to communicate with any civility or respect.  Anger seems to just rest right below the surface, waiting to explode. We’ve all been there at times, myself included. Why? Honestly, it seems like we only talk anymore to convince someone of our views, and we are willing to shout others down if necessary. I guess we feel somehow that by listening to someone we disagree with, that we are affirming and agreeing with what they are saying. That is so not true.  That is actually healthy dialogue.  We can listen, respectfully, even if we do not agree. Think about how often God listens to us. James goes on to say, “anger will not help you live the right kind of life God wants (but pausing to listen is a place to start).” May we live from a higher calling than merely our own agenda. May we re-learn how to listen.  May we truly value others as a way to honor God. And may the tide of anger be swallowed in love. And that’s …real life. ~ Pastor Steve – Eaglebrook Church
