The greatest truths… the most beautiful moments… the grandest sights to behold… warrant a pause.
Too many times we are in such a hurry to get to the next thing, that we miss the magnitude, the beauty, the joy of what is right before us. We are a “bored” culture. Our attention span, according to recent studies, is less than a goldfish (about 4-7 seconds). Therefore, we often live life in a very shallow pool. We never fully enjoy where we are or what we are doing. We are never fully present. We never really learn or grow. We just keep adding stuff into our lives, moving on to the next thing, before we digest what we’ve been given.
There is a word in the Old Testament called “Selah”. It is used around 74 times in various places, but mostly the Psalms. Where the word is placed, indicates a pause. If it were a musical score, it would be the place where the music keeps going as an interlude, and the words stop… giving the listener the chance to reflect. It is usually placed after a deep, foundational truth. “Practicing the pause” has been largely forgotten in our world. But maybe it’s time we get back to it. Stop… pause… reflect on the blessings God has given you… on the truth and comfort He has provided. Slow down, take it in, and actually learn… grow. Honestly, what’s the rush? And that’s…real life. ~Pastor Steve – Eaglebrook Church
